Other Critters at Freestep Farm

Freestep Farm also is home to Petunia, a sweet and ladylike milk goat.  We acquired her in the summer of 2009 and are loving the fresh, sweet milk she gives us every day.

Our packgoat wethers went to a new home in Fortuna where they browse in fresh pastures and help their new owners carry the load when hiking.  Click on the Goat page to see more photos of Jello and Pan in the backcountry, around the farm, and just doing what goats do best… lovin’ life.

Luka Von Sontausen CD is my all-around companion, protector, and farm hand.  She takes good care of her charges, and is always up for a game of Stick.  If you don’t throw it, she may throw it at you.

Beluga is the latest addition to the farm.  He is an Akbash Dog, a livestock guardian breed from Turkey.  These huge dogs are extremely gentle, loving, and protective of their charges.

We also have several felines—some are fancy purebreds who never set foot outdoors, others are rough-and-tumble farm cats who help keep the rodent population under control.  All of them enjoy a good cuddle now and then.

As if we didn’t have enough things that eat, we have recently adopted a horse from a local rescue organization.  “Jimmy” is a 21-year old Thoroughbred who began his career as a racehorse, was then a dressage mount, became a lesson horse at a riding school, and is now a semi-retired pleasure horse for us.

I have wanted a horse since childhood, and it’s only taken me 30-some-odd years to achieve the dream!  Jimmy is gentle and kind, and knows a lot more than we do, so he is a good horse for us to learn on.
